This fresh citrus margarita reminds me of my favorite one at our go-to local Mexican restaurant. It’s bright, refreshing, and made with fresh, natural juices without all the extra sugar and artificial ingredients you’ll find in a lot of premade mixes.
I’ve always loved grabbing margaritas with friends or when taking the family out for Mexican food. And now, I can make one right at home that tastes just as good if not better!

It’s surprisingly simple to make. You can squeeze the juice ahead of time and store in an airtight jar in the fridge, making things easy when you’re ready to serve.
And while most people go straight for a salted rim, I love adding a little sweetness by mixing course salt with course sugar. My go-to combo is kosher salt and Sugar in the Raw. It gives the perfect balance of sweet and salty. So good!
When those first hot days of the year hit, this is the drink I make to officially kick off summer.

Fresh Citrus Margarita Ingredients

Tequila: The base of the cocktail. Use a good-quality blanco or silver tequila for the best flavor
Orange liqueur: Adds depth and a subtle sweetness; I recommend either Grand Marnier or Cointreau, but you can also use Triple Sec
Fresh lime juice: Brings that classic margarita tart and brightness
Fresh orange juice: Adds a natural sweetness and smooth citrus flavor
Agave nectar or simple syrup: Balances the acidity, and you can adjust to taste
Course salt and sugar (optional): For rimming the glass, adding a sweet and salty contrast

How to Make a Fresh Citrus Margarita
Juice the citrus: Squeeze fresh lime and orange juice until you have the needed amounts. I typically use three to four limes depending on size and juiciness, and one orange. You can also prep the juice ahead of time and store it in the fridge.
Shake the cocktail: Fill a shaker with ice and add tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, orange juice, and agave or simple syrup. Shake well until chilled. Smile when you’re shaking, so you also feel like a mixologist!
Mix the salt and sugar: I typically put the salt and sugar mix on a small plate. If you have a glass rimming bowl, that will work perfectly.
Prepare the rim (optional, but I highly recommend!): Run a lime or orange wedge around the rim of the glass, then dip into a mixture of course salt and sugar. And sometimes I rim the entire glass, while other times I rim about half. Depends on my mood!
Pour and serve: Fill your glass with ice, strain the cocktail over top, and garnish with a citrus wedge if desired.

How to Cut Citrus for the Perfect Garnish:
Cut into rounds: Slice limes or oranges crosswise into even rounds.
Trim into wedges: Halve or quarter the rounds depending on your size preference. For limes, you can even keep them as rounds and skip this step.
Make a center slit: Cut a small notch from the middle of the flesh (the very center of the round) to the peel so it can rest securely on the rim.
Garnish: Slide onto the glass.
Tip: Keep the slices slightly thicker so they hold their shape, but not so thick that they become heavy. You want it to stay on the glass while you drink!

How to Serve
This fresh citrus margarita is best served ice cold, poured over fresh ice in a rimmed glass. It’s refreshing, smooth, and perfect for sipping slowly.
Serve it alongside your favorite Mexican dishes, or enjoy on its own while relaxing on the porch or entertaining friends. It’s the kind of drink that instantly makes things feel a little more fun.
This drink also pairs amazingly served with a light appetizer spread, or enjoyed with a full meal.
For gatherings, I highly recommend preparing the juice a day or two in advance! And it pairs nicely with sparkling water and light beers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I used bottled juices instead of fresh?
Fresh juice is highly recommended for the best flavor, but bottled can work in a pinch.
What’s the best tequila to use?
A good-quality blanco (white, sometimes called silver) tequila works best for a clean, crisp flavor. I don’t recommend gold tequila or reposado for this drink.
Can I make this sweeter or less strong?
Yes! Adjust the agave or simple syrup for sweetness, and reduce the tequila for a lighter drink. Or add a bit more alcohol for a stronger drink, I’m not judging. Just be sure to drink responsibly!
Can I make this into a pitcher for a group?
Absolutely. Just scale up the ingredients and mix in a large pitcher. Add ice when serving.
Do I have to rim the glass?
Not at all — it’s optional. But the mix of course salt and sugar adds a really nice balance of flavors. You can also go with just salt or just sugar, based on your preference.
