I’ve mentioned before that I normally choose my mum color first, then pick my pumpkins to match. But the day I went shopping for mums this time, I wasn’t sure what color I wanted.
From my summer flowers, I had a gorgeous Crimson Flame Geranium and a yellow Lemon Nemesia, along with English ivy flowing from a large container on the porch. I also had a Golden Butterfly Argyranthemum flourishing on my table. Even though it was time to decorate for fall, I wasn’t ready to part with either of those containers. Since I wanted to keep them as long as I could, I needed something that would complement them.

So there I was, pulling an empty wagon through the mum section and admiring all the pretty blooms. I kept thinking yellow would blend perfectly with my existing containers. However, I couldn’t picture which pumpkins I could tie it all together with.
I finally decided to leave the mum area and head over to the pumpkins. Thinking about my containers at home, I reminded myself the yellow in them wasn’t really the issue. It was the pink geranium that was making the pumpkin color more difficult. That is, until I stumbled across a deep green pumpkin! It’s the large one sitting on the right side at the top of the porch in my photos.

It really caught my eye, and I can honestly say I had never paid attention to green pumpkins in the past. I even thought to myself, “Is this a new color that just came out this year?” Either way, it certainly had my attention. As I looked around the pumpkin patch, I started noticing more green pumpkins and even green gourds in the most interesting shades.

That was it! I knew those were the colors that would look great with both the yellow and pink in my existing containers. For someone who had never purchased one single green pumpkin in her life, I sure loaded my wagon with multiple sizes and shapes that day. I then headed back over to the mums, which at this point were obviously going to be yellow.

Everything looked so pretty together, especially after I pulled out some of my black candle holders and apple green candles. I never thought I would end up with this blend of colors, but I was so happy I did. It truly was refreshing.

Here’s what’s even more interesting about my fall porch that year: everything still looked beautiful, even through the first falling snow!!

In mid-November, a two-day snow shower fell across the porch as well as the nearby window boxes, which were also still filled with the geraniums and nemesia.

Have you ever given green pumpkins and gourds a try? Let me know in the comments below!
