Thanks to the mix of warm colors and textures, this porch gives fall vibes with what I like to call a golden hour touch. I normally pick my mums out and then pair pumpkins with them. It wasn’t quite like that this time. After choosing the mums, my mind was boggled over what color pumpkins would be perfect for them.

On this particular year, I had my heart set on yellow mums, the ones that have a hint of orange in the center. Although the blooms sometimes fade to solid yellow, those were the ones I was looking for. I was lucky to find some at the very first stop I made. I took several of them home without knowing what color pumpkins I would end up choosing. I can honestly tell you, at the time, yellow pumpkins did not cross my mind. Yellow and yellow just wouldn’t be right.

After taking a couple of days to sort through my collected decor, I came across two of my favorite lanterns, each with a unique shape and a warm bronze finish. Right away, I could picture the bronze next to the gorgeous mums, especially glowing with candles in the evening. Although I often light real candles as the sun starts to go down, in these lanterns, I used battery-operated ones.

I couldn’t find any containers in the potting shed that I thought the mums would look good in, and most of my baskets were too light in color to make the yellow pop. So I set out to look for something a little different.

While I was walking through the basket aisle at Lowe’s, I kept thinking to myself that everything looked similar to what I already had. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but just when I was about to head to a different store, the perfect baskets caught my eye! With a deep rust color, I knew the mums would look spectacular in them. There was so much to love. They were sturdy, had handles, and large braided weaves. Luckily, the store had multiple sizes in stock. Since I always like to mix it up for visual interest, I loaded my cart with small, medium, and large.

After arriving home, I set some of the mums down in the baskets, and they were everything I imagined. The contrast between the two was completely stunning!

I hung my go-to fall wreath on the door and found some rust-colored faux grass for the small bucket hanging next to it. With a few mums left over, I set one in an antique crock that my sister passed along to me several years ago. I placed the others in terracotta pots, all of which blended nicely with the new baskets.

While putting all of this together, I was still puzzled over what color pumpkins I needed. I decided to ponder over it for a while and call it a day. The next morning, when I stepped out to take a look, that’s when yellow pumpkins hit me! There was absolutely no other color I could picture to complete the look. To me, yellow mums and yellow pumpkins are not necessarily the best pairing. However, with the eye taking in rust, bronze, and terracotta, yellow pumpkins could not have been more fitting.

Later that morning, I went to the market and picked up some yellow pumpkins. When I got home and added them to the display, it felt like my heart started singing. They instantly pulled out all the other colors and textures on the porch and brought the whole look together. This was a time when yellow and yellow worked beautifully!

Like some of my other fall porches, an English ivy from a summer combination was still thriving, so I planted one of the mums, then added an ornamental cabbage for a little more fall character.

At the end of a long day, there’s nothing more relaxing than lighting up the candles and enjoying the look of a warm golden hour spread across the porch.

Do you pick your mums first and then your pumpkins? I’d love to hear in the comments how your planning process goes.
