Somewhere between the last hot days of summer and the first crisp mornings of fall, most of us reach the same point. We’re done with the heat, the lawn care, and all the summer to-dos. The temperature finally drops, the air turns cool, and we’re all looking for time to relax. This golden afternoon picnic is the perfect way to do just that.

In this post, you’re stepping into a memorable getaway built in layers, one that starts right on the lawn, one you melt into and never want to leave, one that reminds you to slow down and enjoy the moments in life.
If you love dreaming up a little retreat that makes you and others feel cherished, this one is for you. Gather the things that make you happy, and build it one layer at a time. Each layer adds a little comfort, a little color, something delicious to graze on, and a reason to unwind.

An afternoon like this is as easy as throwing together a picnic basket and venturing out to a nearby park or a quiet spot by the lake. Even simpler, step out into your own backyard and toss a blanket on the lawn.

Once you choose your spot, let the rest of the layers flow by adding texture and seasonal colors. Cutting boards, wooden bowls, and a vase full of fall tassels are perfect for fall settings. I chose ornamental grass plumes from the backyard.

On this golden late afternoon, I set the mood with a candle, some red wine, a throw, and a couple of pillows to frame my little nook. I wanted to surprise Donnie with a little treat that felt cozy and relaxing after a long day of work.

For the board, I chose an English cheddar with whole grain mustard and a white Stilton with apricots, and I highly recommend both.

I also filled out the board with grapes and a dish of sweet preserve. Use whatever preserve you love best, whether that’s raspberry, fig, or apricot. It’s an easy way to add a pop of color and a touch of sweet to the board.

I finished my spread by tucking a long, crusty baguette into a basket, ready for tearing, spreading, and sharing.

You don’t need a special occasion. Just an afternoon, a patch of ground, and someone you’d like to spend time with. Donnie and I had time to talk about the day, reminisce, and enjoy our cozy picnic.
