Salmon Mum Paired with Brown-Hued Pumpkins

This year, salmon ‘Sheffield Pink’ chrysanthemums set the palette for my porch, and they changed color twice before the season ended. Paired with brown-hued pumpkins, multi-tone baskets, ornamental grass, and…

The palette of my porch is always decided by the mums I happen to fall in love with that season. This year, while I was shopping, I ran across the unexpected warmth of salmon chrysanthemums, and they stole my heart.

Little did I know at the time they would later take on a pinkish color and then fade to a pale yellow toward the end of the season. It was a triple bonus, as if I had swapped out the mums along the way, with each color giving the entire porch a stunning new look. If you ever want to try and find them, they are called ‘Sheffield Pink’ Chrysanthemums.

Once I knew the salmon mums were going home with me, I knew right away I wanted to pair them with rich, brown-hued pumpkins. Their muted, leathery textures and earthy tones provide a contrast that makes the salmon flowers look absolutely amazing. I also tucked in a few salmon-colored pumpkins to echo the blooms and tie the whole porch together.

Quite honestly, that season I couldn’t decide who was stealing the show more, the mums or the pumpkins! They both looked incredibly beautiful, as if they were made for each other. It was one of those combinations I found myself stopping to admire every time I walked up the steps.

The multi-tone baskets couldn’t have looked better with these colors, adding even more warmth than the porch already had. The colors truly pulled together, and everything blended perfectly.

I added a little interest and height by planting an upright ornamental grass in the container at the top of the steps. The purplish-pink hues did a fantastic job of picking up the changing colors of the mums, and It was fascinating to watch the plumes dance with every little breeze.

This was another year I left some English ivy from my summer container for a trailing pop of green that blended nicely with the foliage on the mums.

The fall wreath I often use looked great once again. I looped salmon-colored silk ribbon at the top to hang it, tied a sweet little bow near the middle of the loop, and added a multi-loop bow at the bottom.

I later added candles that turned this fall setting into a warm, cozy glow. By then, the mums had taken on their pale yellow color, and the entire porch was simply gorgeous during the golden hour.
