Stroll Through the Steps of Soft Autumn Colors

Our back steps see more traffic than any other entrance, so they always get a seasonal touch. This fall, yellow and orange mums, white baby pumpkins brushed with orange, and…

Our back steps are definitely the most used. Between the outdoor kitchen, the garden, and the Hartley greenhouse, we’re in and out of this area multiple times from morning till evening. Giving these steps a seasonal touch is always something I look forward to.

I didn’t take many photos of this fall display, but I’m sharing the ones I have in hopes they’ll inspire you.

The mums I went with for this display have a mix of both yellow and orange hues, so I chose a variety of pumpkin colors that went beautifully with them. Originally, I planned on just a little mix of white and yellowish green, until I ran across the cutest little white baby pumpkins with orange lining each groove and a soft splash of orange across the ribs. I couldn’t line the steps with large pumpkins, or too many of them, because the containers I used were fairly large and taking up their fair share of the steps.

I used one of my favorite baskets, which has two strips of galvanized metal wrapped around it. This started the display off with a bit of a rustic look. Keeping with the same style, I went with another one of my favorites, a metal bucket with roped handles, which I added to the other side, one step above. I finished balancing the display with tan crocks and two rattan candle holders.

The mums could not have looked more spectacular in the various containers I picked.

At the very top, I left my herbs right where they were. With the kitchen just inside, it’s so handy to have them close by at dinnertime, and their greenery added a little extra interest to the display. Although it didn’t fully make it into the photos, there’s a large coleus in a container at the bottom of the steps that was still thriving nicely. I also had a red Dragon Wing begonia that I wasn’t ready to part with. Neither one lasted nearly as long into the season as the mums did, but I enjoyed them for as long as I could before removing them.

I truly enjoyed this fall display throughout the season. Since we use these steps every day, it was a cheerful welcome each time we strolled through.

If you decorate your back entrance as much as your front, drop me a line in the comments. I’d love to hear about it!
